This is an authentic Allosaurus jimmadseni tooth from the Morrison Formation of Bighorn County, Wyoming. This tooth has the typical black coloration of material from this formation.
Allosaurus lived about 145-155 million years ago, and was one of the largest theropod dinosaurs in Jurassic North America. Allosaurus was a carnivore, and likely fed on dinosaurs such as stegosaurs and sauropods. There is some evidence that Allosaurus may have been a social animal, living in family groups and potentially even hunting in packs. Allosaurus has one of the most impressive bites, as it could open its jaws a stunning 79 degrees! By comparison, T-rex could manage just 63 degrees and humans a paltry 26 degrees. As if the wide gape wasn’t enough, Allosaurus also came equipped with 3 large hand claws that could be used to take down even the largest of prey animals. This was an apex predator by every definition of the phrase!
